Interested in working Behind the Scenes?

CPTG Tech Team

Theatre would be nothing without a talented Tech Team behind the scenes, bringing a show to life. Whether you are a seasoned stage manager or a newcomer with an interest in sound design, we have a place for you! Below are recurring tech positions offered for most of our shows, with a description of the position and the track one must follow to work their way up the chain. CREATIVE PRODUCTION ROLES INCLUDE:

Assistant Director 
Prerequisite: One year of CPTG membership
​
-Required at every rehearsal 
​-Assists the Director with any rehearsal needs
-Demonstrate an understanding of all aspects of directing and acting.
-Participate in cast warm-ups, either warming up with the cast or leading exercises.
-May be required to start rehearsals and run activities in the Director’s absence
-May be tasked with assisting the director with blocking, choreography, or other artistic decisions
-Offer suggestions on creative decisions; help to create rehearsal schedules
-Ensures that those at rehearsal remain on task
Assistant Choreographer
Prerequisite: One year of CPTG membership

-Required at every choreography rehearsal
-Assists the Choreography with any rehearsal needs
-May be required to start choreography, lead warmups, run activities in the Choreographer’s absence
-May be tasked with assisting the choreographer with choreography, or other artistic decisions
Assistant Technical Director 
Prerequisite: must have been a Set Builder for ONE CPTG show
-Assists the Technical Director with any production needs
-Oversees the progress of the set and all Set Builders for the production
-In charge of providing sufficient amount of tech hours for the actors and set builders
-Ensures that those at tech set building hours remain on task
-Assists in overseeing the progress of all technical fields of the production 
-Responsible for tracking and confirming Set Builder’s tech hours
-Handles and manages a carpentry workshop environment while also supervising others. It can include anything from sawing, drilling, and nailing materials together in order to construct the set.
-Operates small to large machinery including drills, power saws, and tables saws etc.
-Executes prearranged task lists in the absence of the Technical Director.
-Must attend strike
Assistant Music Director 
Prerequisite: One year of CPTG membership

-Required at every music rehearsal
-Assists the Music Director with any rehearsal needs
-May be required to start music rehearsals, lead warmups, run activities in the Music Director’s absence
-May be tasked with assisting the Music Director with music parts, or other artistic decisions

PRODUCTION ROLES:

Assistant Stage Manager
Prerequisite: must have been a Production Assistant for ONE CPTG show

-Required at every rehearsal
-Helps run the show from backstage during Tech Week and performances 
-Helps run rehearsals, take attendance, fill out rehearsal reports, collect props, etc.
-Assists in everyday functions of the show process
-Must attend strike

Assistant Lighting Designer
Prerequisite: must have been a part of the Electrics Department  for ONE CPTG show
-Required at Lighting Work Calls prior to Tech Week
-Assists the Lighting Designer with hanging, focusing, and cueing of lights
-Required to be at Cue-to-Cue to help with any lighting needs
-Could be asked to attend other tech week days for lighting assistance
-Responsible for ensuring that those at tech lighting hours remain on task
-Must attend strike
Light board operator 
Prerequisite: NONE!
-Required to be at Cue-to-Cue to help cue lights (don’t worry if you don’t know how, we’ll teach you!)
-Recommended, but not required, to attend light load-in, hang, and focus  
-Operates the light board during all of Tech Week and every performance 
-Expected to arrive 2 hours before each performance to set up light board, and stay after to help take down

Sound engineer 
Prerequisite: Sound Board Operator
-Required to be at Cue-to-Cue to set up microphones for Tech Week
-Helps to adjust levels of performers and band during mic checks before and during every performance
-Expected to arrive 2 hours before each performance to set up microphones, and stay after to help collect microphones, and put sound board away
Sound A2
Prerequisite: NONE!
-Required to be at Cue-to-Cue to help learn the sound board, and put microphones on the actors (don’t worry if you don’t know how, we’ll teach you!)
-The A2 will interact with the show’s cast, crew and musicians to maintain and troubleshoot the show’s audio system during performances from backstage.
-Expected to arrive 2 hours before each performance to set up sound board, help put microphones on the actors, and stay after to collect microphones and put away the sound board
Wardrobe Supervisor 
Prerequisite: NONE!
-
Oversees the green room during every performance to assist with costume malfunctions, quick changes, and any other mid-show costume needs
-
Assists Costume Designer with finding pieces, costume fittings, organization of show’s costume rack, labeling all actors costumes 
-
Required to be at Cue-to-Cue and every evening of Tech Week
-
Expected to arrive 2 hours before each performance to hang up costumes, make sure all the pieces are organized, assist with any last minute show needs
-Helps wash and dry clothes in-between performances (if necessary)
-
Sewing knowledge recommended, not required
-
Must attend strike

Production Assistant
Prerequisite: NONE!

-Required at every rehearsal
-Works backstage during Tech Week and, if needed but not guaranteed, performances 
-Helps take attendance, fill out rehearsal reports, collect props, etc.
-Assists in everyday functions of the show process
-Functions as a Dramaturg throughout the process for the Director (if one is not assigned)
-Doubles as the show’s Gaffer during Tech Week (don’t worry -If you don’t know how, we’ll teach you!)
-
Must attend strike

Electrics Team
Prerequisite: NONE!
-
Assists with the load-in, hanging, and focusing of lights 
-
Could be asked to attend other tech week days for lighting assistance
-
Majority of work occurs weekdays up to 2 weeks prior to performances, based around your class schedule
Spot light operator 
Prerequisite: NONE!
-Required to be at Cue-to-Cue to learn how to operate the spotlights
-Recommended, but not required, to attend light load-in, hang, and focus 
-Operates the spotlights during all of Tech Week and every performance 
-Expected to arrive 2 hours before each performance, and stay after to help take down

Sound board operator 
Prerequisite: NONE!
-Required to be at Cue-to-Cue to help learn the sound board, and put microphones on the actors (don’t worry if you don’t know how, we’ll teach you!)
-Operates the execution of sound cues during all of Tech Week and every performance 
-Expected to arrive 2 hours before each performance to set up sound board, help put microphones on the actors, and stay after to collect microphones and put away the sound board

Assistant Costume Designer
Prerequisite: must have been a Wardrobe Supervisor for ONE
CPTG show
-
Remains in contact with Costume Designer to help execute their vision for the show’s costumes
-
Demonstrate leadership skills and an understanding of all aspects of costume design and materials.
-Participate in cast measurement, purchasing, and assembling, as well as any design meetings.
-
Assists Costume Designer with finding pieces, costume fittings, organization of show’s costume rack, labeling all actors costumes 
-
Oversees the members of the Costumes Department in the Designer’s absence
-
Ensures that those at costume tech hours remain on task 
-
Helps wash and dry clothes in-between performances (if necessary)
-
Sewing knowledge recommended, not required
-Must attend strike

Costume Team
Prerequisite: NONE!
-
Participate in cast measurement, purchasing, and assembling, as well as any design meetings.
-
Assists Costume Designer with finding pieces, costume fittings, organization of show’s costume rack, labeling all actors costumes 
-
Sewing knowledge recommended, not required
-
Maybe be asked to attend Cue-to-Cue and some evenings of Tech Week

Set builder
Prerequisite: NONE!
-
Helps build the set! (majority of work occurs prior to tech week)
-
Required to build at least as many hours as is required by the cast. Typically 10*, but this will be clarified once you are offered the role. (*fluctuates with each show)
-
Majority of building occurs weekdays, based around your class schedule
